The city of Kazan in its past present and future

Kazan is the political and cultural center of the Tatarstan Republic, which is one of the subjects of the Russian Federation. The city is situated 797 km east of Moscow. Kazan is an important road, railway and airway junction, as well as the largest river port on the Volga.
The official languages are Russian and Tatar. The official currency is rouble. The climate is moderate continental.

Kazan population is about 1.2 million people. In 2005, Kazan celebrated its 1000th anniversary.
The cultural and historical value of Kazan city is comparable with that of Moscow and St.-Petersburg. Kazan was awarded by UNESCO for its unique tours up and down the Volga river. There are many theatres, cinemas and libraries in the city.

Annually it holds various international music festivals, art exhibitions and scientific forums. Kazan is the industrial and business center of the Tatarstan Republic. Aircraft producing companies, chemical plants and different food producing companies are situated here.
